Coimbra is home to one of the oldest universities in Europe, Coimbra University. It was founded in Lisbon in 1290, but in 1537 it moved to Coimbria, where it remains today. The university's architecture is famous for its Baroque style.

Fatima


Fatima is one of the largest Catholic pilgrimages in the world. In 1915, three girls were visited by several angels. On Sunday, May 13, 1917, these girls first saw the Blessed Virgin Mary. She told the girls many secrets, called the Secrets of Fatima. The first message was a vision of Peace and Hell, with charred bodies drowning in an ocean of fire. The second said that Russia would "spread her errors through the world, causing wars and persecution against the Church." The third secret is unknown to the public. Each pope will reads the paper on which it written (it is kept in a drawer in the Vatican) because it is supposedly to dreadful to be revealed.

The town is a major pilgrimage location, with over 100,000 people visiting each May 12-13 and October 12-13. The tombs of Jacinta and Francisco, two of the girls, are also major draws.

Lisbon


Lisbon is the capital of Portugal, as well as one of the most important ports in Europe. Sailors from all over the world would stop first in Lisbon before sailing around Africa.
